THOUSAND PIECES OF GOLD

Produced on a shoestring $2 million budget, documentary director Nancy Kelly and her husband, editor Kenji Yamamoto created this romantic western based on a true story. Rosalind Chao stars as Lalu Nathoy, a young woman sold into marriage by her impoverished father in late 19th century China. Lalu is transported to the U.S. by a slave trader, Jim (Dennis Dun), on whom she develops a crush. Although conflicted, Jim fulfills his professional obligation to deliver Lalu to Hong King (Michael Paul Chan), a saloon owner in a rough Idaho mining town. Refusing to participate in Hong King's plan to make her into an exotic prostitute, Lalu keeps her dignity about her and wins the adoration of Charlie (Chris Cooper), Hong King's white, alcoholic partner. Despite the prejudice of the locals, Lalu becomes a cleaning woman and a successful laundress. Though she dreams of marriage to Jim or escape to China, she recognizes Charlie's admirable qualities after a violent incident that casts him in a different light.

And then we Danced

Dancers should not miss this film. It enjoys a very high 92% rating from Rotten Tomatoes - the audience liked it even better at 95%. A passionate tale of love and liberation in the ultraconservative confines of modern Georgian society. The film follows Merab, a  dancer who has been training for years with his partner Mary for a spot in the National Georgian Ensemble. The arrival of Irakli, another male dancer, sparks both an intense rivalry and romantic desire in Merab that may cause him to risk his future in dance and his relationships with Mary and his family. This peek into Georgian society is very absorbing. Some sex scenes.

Corpus Christi

Inescapably thought-provoking, Corpus Christi is the story of 20-year-old Daniel who experiences a spiritual transformation and  absorbed liturgical knowledge while living in a Youth Detention Center. He wants to become a priest but this is impossible because of his criminal record. When he is sent to work at a carpenter's workshop in a small town he arrived in priestly clothes and was assumed to be a priest.  The parish was in need of replacement and he was asked to take over the parish. The arrival of the young, charismatic preacher is an opportunity for the local community to begin the healing process after a tragedy that happened there. This one-of-a-kind  funny and moving film offers fresh themes and interesting perspectives on religion and faith.
